AI smart glasses sound like magic until you’re the one trying to use them on a sidewalk that “flows at a different speed.” We’re Kevin and Palmy, and we get specific about what AI augmented glasses can actually do for blind mobility and low vision independence right now, along with the parts you should never trust with your safety. If you’ve ever searched for assistive technology for the blind, wearable accessibility, or “AI that describes what’s around me,” this conversation is for you.

We start with the foundation: screen readers like JAWS, NVDA, and iOS VoiceOver. Then we dig into the real problem, context. The web is full of missing alt text, unlabeled buttons, and messy layouts, so we explain how on-device AI and scene description tools can infer what’s on the screen or in an image when developers forget to label it. We also talk about why well-written alt text still matters, because it functions like a clean prompt that produces better, more accurate descriptions.

Next we move into the physical world: multimodal AI that can scan labels and answer targeted questions, plus live human-in-the-loop services when precision is mission critical. We repeat the golden rule we live by: AI is an advisor, not a guide dog. Redundancy matters, and cane or guide dog fundamentals come first. From GPS wayfinding and indoor navigation beacons to bone conduction headphones that keep your ears open, we lay out the “system” approach. We also touch on tactile tech and the future of Braille displays, and why education and employment outcomes still tie strongly to Braille literacy.

If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a friend who cares about accessibility, and leave a review. Then tell us: what assistive tech item or app do you refuse to leave home without?

Much of what we're talking about involves brand names, but we do not sell nor endorse any items.
